Applications of Convection in everyday Life

Ventilation: This is the process by which impure and warm air inside the rooms is continuously replaced by fresh air from outside. In rooms with small windows, ventilators are provided at the main window.

Breathing by the inmates of the room increases the percentage of carbon- di-oxide and moisture in the room and makes the air inside the room warmer. This air being lighter rises up, goes out through the ventilators and fresh air from outside enters the room through main windows

Winds are convective air currents. Monsoon clouds move inland from the oceanic mass riding on the convective currents and also based on pressure differentials. But, the monsoon currents bring cold air towards the hot air of the land.

Land and Sea breezes: Water gets heated less readily than land. Therefore, during day we see Sea breezes. Land also cools quickly than water, and therefore after sunset we experience land breezes.

Domestic hot water supply system has the hotter water rising up and the colder water replacing it.

Motor car cooling system. In motor cars and other heavy vehicles the engine is surrounded by a jacket through which water circulates carrying away the excess heat. Thus, circulation takes place because the water gets cooled at the radiator. A fan behind the radiator sucks in air from the atmosphere which helps the water in the radiator to cool quickly.
